Hundreds of people with minimal resources seek care at the HAS campus every day. Most walk many miles to get here.

The Hospital

Founded in 1956, Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti is a 130-bed referral hospital that provides surgical services, internal medicine, pediatrics, high-risk maternity care, diagnostic services, and rehabilitation. The hospital receives patients referred from four HAS community health centers, as well as health centers operated by the Ministry of Health (MSPP), and other volunteer organizations.

HAS strives to address changing needs of the population. Recent significant additions include physical rehabilitation and a prosthetics clinic created for the amputees following the January 2010 earthquake.  Committed to sustainability, the hospital’s full-time complement of 14 physicians and 50 nurses are Haitian, supported by visiting specialists from the US and Europe. International volunteers are accepted on a pre-scheduled basis.

  • HAS provides hospital care for over 345,000 people living within the 610 square mile service area.
  • Emergency patients are received without referrals.
  • The hospital typically receives more than 100 outpatients each day.
  • Approximately half of the hospital’s (average daily census of 130) inpatients are children.
