On July 2, Marianne Kaufmann and Rolf Maibach, winners of the Swiss of the Year award, were immortalized in a plaque on the Alggi-Alp in the geographical center of Switzerland.

Kaufmann and Maibach were elected in January by the audience during the TV show “Swiss Award.” The two campaigned tirelessly last year for the earthquake victims in Haiti.

Rolf Maibach worked at Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti in Deschapelles, Haiti for 14 years. Over Christmas and New Year 2009/2010 he was vacationing in his Swiss home, when he heard on the radio about the earthquake in Haiti and went immediately to the crisis region.

Despite recommendations otherwise, young nurse Marianne Kaufmann remained in the hospital during the disaster, where, she says, her determination and happiness came from working with the patients she met.

Names of the winners of the Swiss of the Year award have been carved on the plaque since 2002.
