...More from our Nurse Educator, Marianne Kauffmann

"In the past months, it has been possible to see some changes in the HAS nursing staff. Part of this may be due to the "Employee of the Month" program which started in October and was designed by six of the nurses and a nurse consultant who has been to HAS many times. We were worried that the program would create jealousies, but so far it is a big success.

Nursing is not a job which you just choose - it is a profession, and you must adore to work with your patients. Most of our nurses truly care about the patients and try to provide high-quality care to our patients.

Even when the wards are overloaded, they are highly motivated. At this time, it hard to import pain medication, and it is hard for the nurses to see the patients suffer with pain while they change a dressing or after an operation.

Several times in the past months we have had accidents with many people in the back of a pick-up truck; this means that ten or more patients arrive at the same time, with lots of injuries.  In these cases, the nurses come from all over the hospital. They work collaboratively and it is amazing how quickly the work gets done."
