Current Needs

You can turn an AIDS patient's life around

We have been visiting some of our most needy patients living with AIDS. Due to discrimination and general poverty, many of these patients have been abandoned by their families. Recently, we visited an AIDS treatment client with three children. At night, they sleep under a plastic tarp - when it rains, the sleeping space floods, so the family is susceptible to respiratory infections. They are poor and do not eat even one meal a day. Without proper nutrition, the AIDS drugs do not have the full effect on the patient.

The current AIDS funding streams have been cut back by PEPFAR and Global Funds, and HAS must subsidize some of the program's essential services.

An inexpensive house built by community volunteers costs $1,000. We have an immediate need for 10 such houses, so a gift of $10,000 can help put these families in a shelter before the end of the year.

Ian G. Rawson, PhD, Coordinator of HAS' Integrated Community Services, says "Maslow's famous pyramid shows that people feel the need to attend first to the basic needs of life, including shelter, food and security. Then they can turn to priorities such as hygiene, learning and other pursuits. Many of our patients are in this stage, and their needs are desperate."

Please, make a contribution now to the AIDS housing project and help to provide shelter and dignity to HAS' AIDS patients.

Telecommunications Upgrade $10,000

The cost of this telecommunications upgrade will include the purchase and installation of computer, fax, telephone hardware and networking equipment. This cost also includes one year's worth of satellite-based internet service and internet-based telephone and fax service. This upgrade will help HAS' physicians and professional staff to access professional journals, research clinical case material, and get technical advice from international colleagues; as well as assist administration in communicating with supporters and donors in the US and Europe.
